From Nick Gravagne...
Last October I saw a most amazing thing. On a special night Jurgen Goering jumped from his chair, bolted to a microphone and belted out “The Cover of the Rolling Stone”, the rock-country satire song of lament. The Y.O. Ranch in Kerrville, Texas lifted off its cinder blocks as Jurgen took the lead, and with the rest of us in refrain tore into the old Dr. Hook tune until we were all satisfied that we had “done it good”.
Jurgen was there because PTG was there, hosted by the South Central Region folks. The host for this night was Scott Jones, a PTG-er of many years and the clever creator of PitchLock and TouchRail. Now Scott is anything but shy, and had an idea that a sing-along piano bar might be fun. Well, it turned out to be an absolute gas! And after about an hour of sitting it out and watching gangs of singers and warblers have at it, Jurgen had had enough. It was his turn, and did he ever take us all for a startling ride!
I am writing this because the idea of a sing-along may sound corny and potentially embarrassing. But it works like this. Scott supplies about 100 songs or so, most of which you know (Proud Mary, for example). Scott knows all the songs and can play them on the piano. Microphones are set up here and there for singers to gather about. A lead singer may emerge from time to time, or not. It doesn’t matter. It’s kind of a free for all, a controlled chaos about which Scott throws an invisible lasso. Song words are projected on a screen for all to see. So, sing if you like, or just watch. No expectations.
This SCRC event kicked off at 8 PM, and although it wasn’t expected to go past 10 PM, we closed up the joint at one in the morning.
Jurgen came to watch. Then lost himself in the moment. Could happen to you.
Don’t miss it.
